ADULT: Wingspan - 77 - 33 mm. Always a nice catch with broad forewings that are distinctly marked. The kidney spot is golden yellow, above the dark central cross-band is a pinkish line and the oval area is somewhat bluish in appearance. CHRYSALIS: Pupates just below ground level. Overwinters in this stage. LARVA: Feeds on a variety of ferns (mainly Bracken) and other plants such as willowherb, sallows and nettles. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light and sugar. HABITAT: Parks, woods and gardens. FLIGHT PERIOD: June to July with an occasional separate brood in August. STATUS: Resident and common. |
